A Healthier Halloween! A Smart Approach to Halloween Candy and Treats

At HKC we love to throw a great party, and that’s just what we did.  We came up with a menu of fun, festive food and candy that contains more than just sugar, fat and artificial dyes! YES, halloween means pillowcases filled with candy. But it is also filled with fun costumes, trick-or-treating (great exercise), and the opportunity to teach kids about the concept of moderation.

Carrots, the orange power food: Orange you glad they’re so good for you?

Carrots win the popularity contest of root vegetables, especially with children and Bugs Bunny! This is lucky because carrots are a terrific source of carotene, which is not found in other root vegetables. Carotene becomes vitamin A when absorbed by the cells in the intestine and is essential for good health. Other super foods, like spinach, broccoli and zucchini actually have more carotene, but carrots have the advantage of being inexpensive and more widely available.

Well spring has finally sprung and we at Healthy Kids Co. couldn't be more egg-cited!  We decided it would be fun to put together a healthy, colorful, and pleasing lunch menu for little kids to celebrate Easter and to show parents that healthy eating and smarter choices need not be bland and boring!

Healthy Kids was at the 20th Annual DC Health and Fitness Expo and we had a great time!  We spoke to over 500 parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles and were impressed to see it really does take a village to raise healthy kids! The number of concerned parents did not surprise us, we hear from them everyday and they tell us it's hard to raise healthy kids. But the amount of concerned grandparents, aunts and uncles was truly inspiring...
