How can families fight the childhood obesity epidemic?

  • Make a family commitment to becoming healthier, not just to “losing weight.” Once this is a priority, parent(s) should begin to incorporate as many of the following habits and practices listed below as possible. These do not need to be tackled all at once. Remember when encouraging the development of healthy habits, slow and steady wins the race.
  • Start each day with a healthy breakfast.
  • Encourage the consumption of more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy proteins (lean meat, seafood, legumes and low fat dairy) throughout the day.
  • Commit to a "meatless Monday" each week, or any other day you prefer.
  • Get active for 60 minutes most days of the week (remember, this does not need to be all at once!).
  • Limit screen time to less than 2 hours each day (screen time includes computer, video games, TV)
