How does someone gain excess weight?

Simply put, we gain one pound in weight when we consume an extra 3,500 calories over and above what our body uses for growth (during childhood), metabolic activities, and exercise.

This excess caloric burden does not have to be in one day, it can be over days, weeks or months. If we consume 100 extra calories each day for one year (700 excess calories each week), we end up gaining nearly 10 pounds in a year! And 100 calories is only half a can of soda so you can see how easy it is for the pounds to pile on.
