What is the scope of the childhood obesity problem?

Today, nearly 20% of all American children are obese— an astonishing 12½ million children! When you add overweight children the number balloons to nearly 1 in 3 American children; that’s 25 million kids! The number of obese children has tripled in only one generation making this a true individual and societal epidemic.

Look around and you can see that Americans today are much too heavy. You need only watch a movie from the 40’s, 50’s or 60’s to see how “thin” the extras appear. Now consider that extras are chosen to represent “average” people! They appear thin to us today because each decade Americans are getting larger, literally becoming “super-sized.” Amazingly, the average American adult is now 24 pounds heavier than in 1960!
