What is the scope of the problem?

Today, 20% of all American children are overweight or obese (putting these 12.5 million children at risk for current and future health issues). When you add those at risk for becoming overweight, the number balloons to nearly 1 in 3 American children; that’s 25 million kids! The number of obese children has tripled in only 1 generation making this a true epidemic (American Heart Association, Understanding Childhood Obesity, 2010).

Look around and you can see that Americans today are much too heavy. Watch a movie from the 40’s, 50’s or 60’s and note the extras (chosen to represent “average” people). Notice how they appear so “thin?” This is because each decade Americans are getting larger, literally becoming “supersized.” Amazingly, the average American adult is now 24 pounds heavier than in 1960! This is why 7 in 10 adults are overweight or obese (American Heart Association, Understanding Childhood Obesity, 2010).
